英文摘要 | Recently, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) have been installed horizontally, rather than vertically, as an alternative method to target volatile organic compound (VOC) mitigation. In this study, a 2-dimensional (2D) analytical model of VOC diffusion in the unsaturated soil and horizontal PRBs is presented. The analytical model is validated by numerical results. Influences of PRBs' properties (e.g., thickness, adsorption and reactive materials) and environmental factor (e.g., temperature, pH and water content) on the attenuation of VOCs are investigated by the developed analytical solutions. Results demonstrated that the upward diffusion of VOCs is significantly affected by the temperature and PRB's water content. An increase of the temperature from 298 K to 315 K can result in an increase of the VOC concentration by a factor of 1.5. This is because the higher temperature leads to a larger effective diffusivity of VOC, while the oxidation rate increases. As the water saturation of PRB increases, the oxidation rate rises, while the diffusion of VOCs through the barrier slows down. The optimal water saturation of PRB is observed to range from 0.28 to 0.55. To ensure optimal performance of the PRB, it is suggested to constantly observe and control the water content of the PRB, particularly in the warmer months and the arid areas. The results demonstrated that a 0.3 m horizontal PRB can serve as a good barrier for preventing VOC vapors from reaching the buildings and land surface. The developed analytical model may serve as a valuable tool for the design of PRB for VOC mitigation. |
