Impact-based evaluation of multivariate drought indicators for drought monitoring in China

英文摘要The increasing severity and widespread occurrence of droughts have led to reduced crop productivity, under-scoring the critical importance of improving drought monitoring. Although a variety of studies have highlighted the importance of multivariate drought indicators for tracking drought conditions, studies on the evaluation of their performance for drought monitoring based on drought impacts (e.g., crop yield) in China have been rather limited. This study investigated the performance of four drought indicators, including the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), and Standardized Compound Event Indicator (SCEI), for drought monitoring by using crop yields as the reference data from 1980 to 2018 in China. The results demonstrated significant correlations between crop yield and these indicators, with a higher correlation in arid/semi-arid regions than that in humid regions. Based on the mean correlation with crop yields, the multivariate drought indicators can outperform the SPI in certain regions in China (e.g., arid and semi-arid regions). The results highlighted the importance of selecting suitable multivariate drought indicators for monitoring based on regional characteristics. This study can provide valuable insights for drought monitoring and prediction in China, which are useful for drought management and decision-making to reduce drought impacts.
