Cooling or warming climatic background for the expansion of human activity in arid inland China and the Tibetan Plateau over the past ~4000 years?

英文摘要Intensified human activities during the last several thousands of years have been identified globally. About 4000 years ago, Chinese Neolithic cultures collapsed and were succeeded by Bronze Age culture, which was accompanied by a significant spatial expansion of human activities, as demonstrated by the permanent human occupation of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) since ~3600 years ago, and by the substantially increased number of archaeological sites in arid inland northwestern China (AINC) and the TP since ~4000 years ago (Fig. 1A, B). The significant spatial expansion of human activities to AINC and the TP were initially proposed to have occurred against the background of long-term climate cooling. Specifically, the stacked Northern Hemisphere (30°-90°N) temperature record has been cited to demonstrate the longterm cooling background for the permanent human occupation of the TP, and for the increased number of archaeological sites in AINC and the TP. However, no reconstructed temperature record from either AINC or the TP is incorporated within the Northern Hemisphere temperature stack. By contrast, some of the recently-reported temperature records from both regions indicate a possible long-term warming climatic background since 4000 years ago.
