英文摘要 | Water is important to life activity. Life activity cannot exist without water according to our current knowledge. Biochemical reactions are the fundamentals of life activity. Many materials should be dissolved in water to ensure biochemical reactions happen effectively in living creatures. Water is a solvent in biochemical reactions of life activities for energy and nutrition transfer. However, water is liquid status only at temperature ranging from 0 degrees C to 100 degrees C at 1 atm. This means at 1 atm biochemical reactions for life activity of creatures can happen at temperature normally between 0 degrees C and 100 degrees C. Therefore, in the desert or harsh cold Arctic/Antarctic area on earth, there is no or scant life activity due to lack of liquid status water for energy and nutrition transfer in biochemical reactions of life activity. In addition, due to the same reason, no life activity is found in the universe except for on earth now. Until now, all life activities we have known utilize water as solvent. Ionic liquids (ILs) may change the game rule of life activities cultivation on earth and in the universe. ILs are a kind of salt. Liquid status window of water is from 0 degrees C to 100 degrees C at 1 atm. However, ILs have much wider liquid status window than water. At temperature ranging from-100 degrees C to +500 degrees C, there are liquid status ILs. In addition, many ILs are non-volatile or extremely low volatile. This means that some ILs can be liquid status without any mass loss at a wide temperature range and a wide pressure range. According to our current knowledge, ILs are the unique material with wide liquid status window, which can be liquid status at very low temperature (-100 degrees C) and very high temperature (+500 degrees C). The average temperature at the surface of planets in the solar system is between-201 degrees C and +471 degrees C. ILs can be still liquid status at the average surface temperature of several planets in the solar system. ILs are also good solvent to dissolve organic and/or inorganic materials. According to our current knowledge, life activities need water to transfer energy and nutrition. However, when water is replaced using ILs to transfer energy and nutrition, life activities may happen at a wide temperature range and a wide pressure range on earth, in the solar system, in the galaxy system, and in the universe. In order to look for life activity in ILs based culture medium, several ancient species are utilized in this work, including algae NIVA CHL1, algae NIVA CHL163, and moss MZYS-2101. We found that algae NIVA CHL163 can grow in ionic liquid (IL) 2-[2-hydroxyethyl(methyl)amino] ethanol chloride (MDEACl) based culture medium. In addition, effect of ILs on chlorophyll of moss was investigated by cultivation of moss in IL culture medium. We found that a moss (MZYS-2101) can stay in pure IL MDEACl without any significant green color change of chlorophyll after 5 months. This work is promising for creature cultivation using IL based culture medium. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |
