Specific sediment yield regionalization and classification using multivariate statistical and GIS tools: a case of hillside reservoirs in semi-arid Tunisia

英文摘要The comprehension of a process variability mode and its causing factors may help to make a preventive and conservative decision. This work aims to develop a spatial regionalization of water erosion dynamics and identify key factors that control their variability in semi-arid Tunisia. The study is based on a combined approach of multivariate statistical analyses for 16 geomorphological and hydro-sedimentary variables, characterizing 24 small watersheds of hillside reservoirs located in the Tunisian Dorsal and the Cap Bon Region. Over the study period (1994-2006), measured annual specific sediment yield (SSY) was shown to vary between 1.9 and 32.9 t/ha/year, with an average of 15.3 t/ha/year. The corresponding coefficients of variation (C-V) vary between 0.63 and 1, revealing the importance of erosion dynamics variability and heterogeneity in the study area. Key results made it possible to develop a spatial typology of four different regions based on geomorphological and hydro-sedimentary resemblances between considered catchments. The least vulnerable watersheds to water erosion were shown to occupy the southwestern part of the study area. The erosive dynamic is moderate on the southern boundary and accentuates gradually towards the central part of the Tunisian Dorsal. Moving to the Northern border towards the Cap Bon Region, the erosive process aggressivity becomes very important and yields major quantities of sediment. This study also showed that erosion dynamics is moderate to high in 75% of the studied watersheds. Finally, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to generate a zonation map, representing the spatial developed typology of water erosion processes in the study area.
