| 英文摘要 | The rose (gul in Turkish) is a well-known symbol in Sufism, especially in mystical poetry. A metaphor for the thorny divine beauty that the nightingale worships, the flower inherits additional interpretations in confreres' manuals, especially from apocryphal hadiths. One such writing, the Treaty of the Rose Window by Ibrahim el-Esrefi el-Qadiri, a sheikh of the Esrefiyye branch of the Ottoman Qadiriyya, explains the symbolic meanings of three representations of roses in the form of rosettes sewn onto the headdress worn by Sufis. The article argues that previous readings of the treatise may have missed the real point of the text. For Muslim mystics, beyond the question of the hadith, the rose is indeed a metaphor for the blossoming of the Prophet among humans manifesting the presence of God. But more precisely, the translation of the treatise reveals that its author envisages the rose as a sign whose hidden meanings are known only to a few Sufi masters (like a few roses in the desert) who have received a prophetic mission and divine favor. |
