英文摘要The enhancement of soil fertility, through organic amendments, improves the soil adsorption complex (SAC) and, consequently, its holding capacity for nutrients. However, the availability of nutrients for plant uptake does not depend entirely on their absolute values in soils, but also on their ratios/balance. This study aims to assess the cumulative effect of three annual applications of sewage sludge (SS) at 0, 40, 80, and 120 t center dot ha(-1) on soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) and base saturation (BS) in a sandy (S) soil and a loamy-sand (LS) soil with low CEC (1.8 and 2.2 meq center dot 100 g(-1), respectively). The effect of SS on soil saturation by Ca, Mg, Na, and K and their ratios Ca/K, Mg/K, and K/CEC was also investigated. Results showed that SS application improved soil CEC and soil BS, particularly in the soils amended with 120 t center dot ha(-1) (SS-120). The exchangeable base cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+) resulted in a 100% saturation of soil SAC, where soil surface was mostly occupied by Ca with 68%, followed by Mg with 31%, and then Na and K (1%). High Ca and Mg inhibited K availability indicating imbalances in soil nutrients. However, the excessive rate of SS (120 t center dot ha(-1)) decreased Ca and Mg saturation, resulting in the decrease of Ca/K and Mg/K ratios and the increase of K/CEC, thus a higher availability of exchangeable K in both soils. This study showed K availability was affected by the excess of both Ca and Mg, thus favoring K loss via leaching. Therefore, balancing the soil exchangeable cations and their ratios through adding more nutrients could be important in correcting cation deficiencies.
