THE LAND SURFACE VEGETATION FEATURES OBSERVED BY GPM/DPR BACKSCATTERING IN MONGOLIA

英文摘要This study aimed to characterize the microwave Ku-band and Ka-band backscattering over the Mongolian three different vegetation density regions, observed from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM)/Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). The GPM/DPR's Ku-band and Ka-band signal's normalized radar cross section (NRCS or sigma(0)) values were investigated for the analysis of incidence angle dependency and the seasonal variation. Around the nadir, sigma(0) shows the highest values from all forest, grass and desert areas respectively. The seasonal variations of backscatter and Leaf Area Index (LAI) were similar to each other especially at the vicinity of nadir. For the incidence angle dependency, both Ku-band and Ka-band backscatter responses remained constant from dense canopy forest but decreased rapidly from the desert surface at higher than 2 degrees. The GPM/DPR observation exhibits significant vegetation characteristics from the land surface at incidence angles within similar to 2 degrees to similar to 8 degrees. From the result, we proposed that Ku-band radar is suitable for forest detection while Ka-band radar is suitable to distinguish the desert from the surface.
