英文摘要	In semi-arid regions, overgrazing is largely responsible for the degradation of prairie and steppe rangeland ecosystems. Here, we have developed a rapid method for estimating pastoral value that encourages the rational management of grazing. We propose calculating pastoral value based on in situ measurements of stratum height for grassland species (Si), which stand in for feed composition indices (Isi) in the equation. We obtained conclusive results for three types of prairie and steppe rangelands in Algeria: correlations were very strong between pastoral value and pastoral production (expressed in feed units for meat production [UFV]). We hope that this inexpensive, straightforward, and rapid approach for estimating pastoral value will serve as a useful decision-making tool, given that it can help define appropriate per-hectare stocking rates.
