Desert Aeolian Sand Cementation via Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation

英文摘要In recent years, microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) acting as an environment-friendly approach has been applied to several fields of geotechnical engineering, such as slope stabilization, liquefaction resistance, and ground improvement. The essence of this MICP technique is to utilize precipitated calcium carbonate to cement loose sand particles thereby improving the mechanical behaviors of sands. In the current study, the MICP technique is applied to cement loose aeolian sands which are further to be the road subgrade in situ. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of cementation solutions (calcium chloride and urea) with different concentrations (0.25M, 0.5M, 0.75M, 1.0M, and 1.5M), finding the most favorable one. First, the physical properties of aeolian sand are found. Then, the bacterial suspension and cementation solution are injected respectively. Finally, the macro mechanical behaviors of bio-cemented sand samples are examined by the unconfined compressive tests. Moreover, the microstructures of bio-cementation are also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.
