英文摘要 | The present study is based upon the field survey we conducted in the Balkan Peninsula, among the Aromanians of Bitola and its surroundings. In this region, where various ethnic groups lived together, the Aromanians used to be the most numerous. Largely due to them, the town, and the villages neighbouring it, witnessed remarkable economic and cultural development in the latter part of the 19th century, and the first decade of the 20th century (until the Balkan wars). Trade and the industries throve, while art, music, and literature, together with education flourished in the town, which also served as the capital of vilayet of Manastir (this was the official Turkish name of Bitola). After the 1912 and 1913 wars, and especially after World War I, the area was attached to Serbia, and Bitola became a minor urban settlement. In the years of communist Yugoslavia, it regained its former position and became one of the most important cities in the Republic of Macedonia. The Aromanians in Bitola and the surrounding villages, alongside their Slav compatriots, adapted successfully to the status quo of the territory. Together with the majority population, they worked in its numerous industries. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, however, the Aromanians began to experience discrimination from the authorities and the dominant group in the community. As a result, a real exodus began, and many Aromanians moved out to more hospitable places, in search for a life without inequity or pressure. Some migrated to the major towns of the country, where the businesses of Bitola were relocated, or new ones sprang up. A significant number of them took the exile road. Linguistically, we noticed that, in the town of Bitola and the surrounding villages, such as Mulovishti, Tarnova, Magarova, Nijopole (Gopeshi is now almost completely deserted), the Aromanians that still speak their mother tongue are increasingly fewer. At Mulovishti, our subjects told us that, in its days of glory, about 6,000 people lived there. Nowadays, the population of the village, most of which is now abandoned, stands at about 60-70 inhabitants. The linguistic data that we gathered and/or recorded among the Aromanians of Mulovishti, and Bitola, in May and October 2018 respectively, indicate the existence, in their vernacular, of phonetisms specific to the Megleno-Romanian dialect. Our observations and commentaries concord with those of T. Papahagi, who, in his 1930 study, concluded that, in the 17th century, a small group of Megleno-Romanians might have settled at Mulovishti and Gopeshi, thus leaving traces of their presence in Aromanian. The respective phonetisms remain vivid even today. |
