英文摘要 | Sand and dust storms (SDS) are common events in arid and semi-arid regions. This study aims to determine the critical geographical directions of SDS in urban areas with a case study in the city of Gonabad in the northeast of Iran. For this purpose, a frequency analysis was performed based on horizontal visibility, wind direction, and vegetation cover using remote sensing images. In addition, the Sand and Dust Storm Direction Index (SDSDI) was introduced which is the ratio of the SDS frequency to wind frequency for each geographical direction. The results showed that the main activity of the SDS occurred from April to September in the southeast direction in the study area. The results confirmed the impact of vegetation cover on the occurrence of the SDS, but in extreme events cannot control it alone. The frequency of SDS in the study area is closely related to the cyclonic and cold front activity. The SDSDI has determined the critical geographical directions of the SDS. This indicator can show critical directions for wind erosion. Therefore, controlling and non-desertification measures can focus on them. |
