The biodiversity and benthic community structure in the Cenomanian-Turonian Galala Formation, Northern Galala Plateau, Eastern Desert, Egypt

英文摘要The analysis of stratigraphic data from the C/T Galala Formation exposed in a new outcrop from the Galala City (northeast Egypt, southern Tethys) revealed the mechanisms behind changes in biodiversity and community structure of the macroinvertebrates. Based on both macrofossil and microfacies analyses, seven facies associations including intertidal, shallow subtidal, and deep subtidal depositional environments were recognized. Two distinct macroinvertebrate associations corresponding to these environments and dominated by mollusks and echinoids were identified. These associations show a gradual change and cyclic pattern in the diversity and community structure. The Cenomanian association is dominated mainly by opportunistic, epifaunal suspension feeders (oyster bivalves) and is characterized by higher diversity values (high Shannon and high Dominance). In contrast, the Turonian association is dominated mainly by infaunal deposit feeders of gastropods, and is characterized by lower diversity. The increase in nektic/planktic taxa and decrease in benthic ones during the latest Cenomanian may have resulted from deepening. Three third-order mixed sequences were identified and correlated with their regional and global counterparts.
