| 英文摘要 | Palestine needed people who would build agriculture and the economy from scratch and transform the desert into the Jewish homeland. The Zionists not only had to encourage new arrivals but also prepare the future settlers, chiefly the youth, to live in a new environment and choose new jobs. What was needed was the new Jew, capable of working hard in the field or in a factory and appreciating physical prowess. Meanwhile, the Galut Jew became a symbol of backwardness, a way of living and thinking that should become history. This notion served as a contrast to emphasize the features of the new Jew, a haluts, settler, sabra, and to demonstrate the differences between living a proud life in Palestine and slavery in the remaining countries. |
