英文摘要 | The concept of the Desert and the Sown has received considerable critique over the past few decades as archaeologists and historians have begun to move away from a focus on the settled lands to explore the wilder regions on their peripheries. Yet, the physicality of the concept is undeniable, however complex the social and economic structures that straddle the perceived divide. As rainfall decreases, so does vegetation. East of Amman the lush countryside of the Jordan Valley gives way to light dun-colored gravel plains. Beyond the oasis of al-Azraq, the bland brown landscape changes dramatically to a sea of stark black boulders, stretching away to a wide distant horizon. To the south of the country, the gravel plains are interspersed with belts of sand and isolated patches of salt-tolerant scrub vegetation. These landscapes, neither desert nor sown, constitute the badia (Arabic badiya desert, steppe), a land that has been home to hunters and pastoralists truly since time immemorial. |
