英文摘要In the present study, we discuss the issue of spiritual guidance in the early Egyptian monasticism. My argument is twofold: first, the archetypal figure of the spiritual guide in the Christian East is epitomized by the Desert Fathers. Shortly, the abba was regarded as the spiritual father (the ascetic authority). Second, the ascetics did not assume the authority to bind and loose (the institutional authority). Our investigation has allowed us to remove certain cliches concerning the role of spiritual father in the Christian East. By this we mean delimiting the spiritual father's role from other roles that are related by not identical, such as those of teacher (didaskalos), spiritual master or even confessor-priest. In our opinion the abba or spiritual guide is mainly defined as an anthropos pneumatikos, which means that the spiritual father's authority is not identical to a teacher's, because what an elder conveys through his word is not a doctrine, but his personal experience concerning spiritual life. Briefly, the wisdom that an elder imparted was of his own making. On the other hand, we have found that the authority of a spiritual father is not confined to that auctoritas claimed by the bishop or priest. Whereas the bishop or confessor-priest exerts an authority delegated by an institution (de jure authority), the spiritual father's authority is based on his personal charisma (de facto authority). Briefly, the tradition of spiritual fatherhood is based on a personal rather than institutional model. From this perspective, in late antiquity, the rising number of Christians entering the priesthood faced a profoundly pastoral dilemma: whether to adhere to a more traditional approach to church life, or to advocate a more monastic model of spiritual guidance. In other words, the dilemma was between the more institutional or administrative approach and the more inspirational or charismatic approach. Finally, my opinion is that the early monastic model (which excelled in the ascetic charismatic gifts of spiritual fathers) and the institutional model (primarily defined by sacramental implications) would complement each other and in time would produce a unified tradition of spiritual fatherhood.
