| 英文摘要 | Surface deposits constitute an underutilised resource for archaeological research. While surface archaeology usually cannot address questions of chronology, it allows insights into human behavioural organisation at large spatial scales that cannot be achieved with a focus on stratified sites. In this paper, I report the results of a field survey of Middle and Later Stone Age (MSA and LSA) lithic artefacts preserved on the surface of the Central Namib Desert. As the Namib is one of the driest regions on Earth, and has been for millions of years, the Namib records evidence of the strategies early humans employed to survive in the desert environment. Based on characteristics of the recorded assemblage, it appears that human groups over tens of thousands of years in the Namib (i) employed local stone with subtle shifts in procurement and exploitation patterns between the MSA and LSA; and (ii) focused activities into landscape zones lying nearby ephemeral riverbeds. These data suggest some of the ways that humans were able to successfully exploit the resources of the desert environment, highlighting the adaptive flexibility of Pleistocene populations in Africa but also raising additional questions for future exploration. |
