英文摘要The case of two soil scientists (Viktor Abramovich Kovda [1904-91] and Boris Georgievich Rozanov [1929 -931), working with international organizations in the 1970s and 19805, provides an insight into how Soviet researchers participated in the elaboration of desertification as a global environmental issue. It is suggested that their positive engagement with the desertification debate was rooted in a Russian scientific tradition encompassing the study of desiccation and soil degradation as well as a concern for the state of the USSR's arid regions of Kalmykia and Central Asia. Through their activities, the two scientists contributed to a 'silent ecologization of scientific and public discourse prior to the opening up of society under Gorbachev, and to the maintenance of international concern for the issue of desertification.
