英文摘要This article examines the relationship between ecocritical theory and postmodern theory with reference to selected works by Jean Baudrillard, Italo Calvino, J.G. Ballard and Umberto Eco. It follows the argument made by ecocritics that postmodernism is a fundamentally textual theory which represses the real at the expense of the natural world, and which therein causes 'sign pollution'. It then moves on to demonstrate that this sign pollution leads to the creation of a metaphoric desert in much the same way as actual pollution causes desertification. The conclusion to the article argues that despite the distinction between 'reality' and 'textuality' postmodernism and ecocriticism both have 'hermetic' attributes and that, while worthwhile, ecocriticism remains locked in the very textuality against which it argues.
