英文简介The overall goal of this project is to recruit and characterize a VA-based cohort of veterans with post-9/11 southwest Asia, Afghanistan, and Djibouti (SWAAD) deployment with and without deployment-related lung disease (DLD) and to identify deployment and clinical characteristics associated with DLD, to find cellular markers of activation and inflammation in those with DLD, and to monitor longitudinal respiratory health outcomes in those with and without post-9/11 SWAAD DLD. Southwest Asia, Afghanistan, and Djibouti deployment is associated with exposure to burn pits and desert dust that have been linked to post-9/11 deployment-related asthma and small airways lung diseases (e.g. bronchiolitis). Deployment and clinical characteristics that predict DLD, and long-term prognosis of DLD is unknown. Given the influx of post-9/11 deployers leaving the military and enrolling in VA healthcare, VA-based clinical/translational research programs are needed to identify clinical biomarkers of DLD and to monitor long-term lung function and health outcomes.
