英文简介PROJECT 1 ? ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT 1 ? EP1 - NARRATIVE Exposure to toxic metal mixtures (i.e., U, As, Mo, Se, and V) through ingestion of contaminated drinking water could pose a risk to Pueblo and Navajo communities that live in the proximity of abandoned mine waste sites hazardous substances. Our initial results suggest that the dissolution of U-V and As-Fe minerals, combined with intermittent rain patterns unique to semi-arid climates, control the release of U and other metals that accumulate in local plants. This project will make use of ubiquitous resources both by geochemically customized immobilization strategies making use of existing minerals in mine wastes, as well as exploiting bioaccumulation patterns from local plant root systems.
