英文摘要 | Expansive soils distribute extensively in arid and semi-arid regions all over the world, which could cause tremendous damages to infrastructures due to the expansion of soils when water exists. Several types of technologies have been developed to mitigate expansive soils including mechanical methods and chemical methods. In this study, a type of sustainable material, biochar, was adopted to treat expansive soils. Biochar is created from organic biproducts from animal, agricultural, and forestry wastes that undergo pyrolysis, which is cost effective. Considering the strong water absorbability, biochar would limit the contact of water with soil particles to reduce the soil expansion deformation. Three different biochar contents by weight (i.e., 2%, 4%, and 6%) were used in this study and the effectiveness of the biochar treatment was verified by three types of tests including Atterberg limits, free swell index, and expansion index tests. Test results in this study demonstrate (1) the addition of biochar would not change the liquid limit but induce the increase of plastic limit; (2) biochar is effective to restrict the expansion deformation of expansive soils; and (3) there is an optimum biochar content which was 2% in this study. |
