英文简介Mineral dust is one the most important types of aerosols in northwestern part of China, which often mixes with cloud (i.e., dusty cloud), making dusty cloud a unique phenomenon in this region. The conventional satellite remote sensing, combining several visible and infrared channels, often misclassifies these dusty pixels as cloud. There are few studies focusing on detecting dusty cloud using hyper-spectral infrared observations. In this project, by combining the active/passive satellite remote sensing data and high-spectral radiative transfer model simulations, we will develop a new and fast approach to detect dusty cloud in northwestern part of China using hyper-spectral infrared observations, which can facilitate the retrieval of cloud thermodynamic phase and optical properties. First, we will combine multiple satellite instuments (active and passive) and ground-based measurements to classify cloud, dusty cloud, and mineral dust aerosols. Second, we will simulate the hyper-spectral infrared characteristics for cloud, dusty cloud, and mineral dust aerosols. Last, we will develop a new and fast approch to detect dusty cloud for this arid/semi-arid region based on the simulations and current cloud detection techniques.
