英文摘要	Sorghum is one of the main staple food crops for the world's poor and food insecure people in the semi-arid tropics of Africa and Asia. It is an important source of feed, fodder and bio-fuel apart from food. India contributes about 16% of world's total sorghum production. Total area under sorghum production in the country was 5.65 million hectares during 2015-16. The objective of present study was (i) to examine the growth trend in area, production and productivity of sorghum in Maharashtra (ii) to estimate the relative contribution of area and yield in the production of sorghum, and (iii) to measure instability in area, production and productivity in sorghum in the study area. Present study was based on secondary data for the period 1965-66 to 2014-15. The area allocated by the farmers in the study area was declining with a compound growth rate of -1.18 per cent per annum during 1965-66 to 2014-15. The growth trend analysis for production and yield of sorghum crop was registered positive trend and it was augmenting with a compound growth rate of 0.14 and 1.32 per cent respectively during same period of time. The contribution of area, yield and their interaction effect on overall performance of sorghum production in State suggest that area under sorghum production in Maharashtra was the important factor that influenced overall growth of sorghum production in the study period. The variability analysis for area, production and yield suggests that year to year area variability under sorghum was found to be 19.18 per cent during the study period in Maharashtra State. The instability for production and productivity of sorghum was found to be 32.44 and 27.19 per cent, respectively.
