| 英文摘要 | The Euclides da Cunha Square was and still is a public space that provokes uneasiness in the inhabitants from Recife for its design motif - the "sertao" (semi-arid region/hinterland in the Northeast of Brazil), that in the collective imagination is linked to a region of suffering. However, Burle Marx was able to work majestically on ecological attributes - by recreating the microclimate of the sertao in a coastal area - and plastic attributes of the caatinga vegetation. Thus, the Euclides da Cunha Square is the only public space in Brazil with such characteristics, and, because of its aesthetic, botanical, artistic, historical, ecological and landscape values, it is recognized as a historic garden and as a cultural heritage by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan). Due to its importance in the global landscape scenario, this article aims to rescue the history of Euclides da Cunha Square, which will serve as an instrument for restoration interventions, ensuring that no historical or artistic falsehood is committed. |
