英文摘要	Marsdenia megalantha Goyder & Morillo, a shrub found in Brazilian semi-arid regions, is described as a cause of spontaneous poisoning in cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, horses, and donkeys. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of the plant toxic principle being transferred by milk in amounts high enough to cause poisoning in suckling animals. The plant at doses of 10 and 7 mg/kg of live weight was administered to a lactating cow and a lactating ewe for five and ten days respectively, and no infant presented clinical signs of intoxication. A lactating goat that received 25 mg/kg for three days showed, 24 hours after the last dose, clinical neurological signs characterized by: ataxia, muscle tremors, muscle stiffness, falling after stimulation, and difficult to stand up. The absence of clinical signs in the kids of the three studied species during the experiment, at the doses and period administered, indicates that the toxic principle of this plant is probably not transferred by the milk in amount high enough to cause poisoning in suckling animals.
