英文摘要 | The construction of structures on expansive soil is a problem worldwide. This type of soil is found in many places all over the world especially in the arid and semi-arid regions. The soil swells on wetting consequently strength reduces and shrinks on drying resulting in large volume changes. In saturated state the expansive soil behaves like soft soil. The granular pile technique is usually applied in case of soft soil, may be applied in soft expansive soil too. This paper presents outcome of an experimental study conducted on a single granular pile constructed in prepared soft expansive clay. Granular piles of sand without and with geogrid encasement were made in the soil. The consistency of soil, s/d ratio (where s= spacing between the granular piles and d= diameter of granular pile as per unit cell concept) and diameter of pile were the variables of the study. The load tests were performed for different combination of soil consistencies and other variables. It is noted that the load carrying capacity of soft expansive clay reinforced with granular pile got significant enhanced with respect to unreinforced clay bed. The load carrying capacity increases as the consistency of the soft expansive clay increases. Piles arrangement that gives s/d ratio more than 3 does not give any significant improvement in the load carrying capacity of the granular pile. The load carrying capacity of a pile is also found increasing with the diameter of the granular pile. Geogrid encased granular pile performs better than the ordinary granular pile. Finite-element analyses have also been performed using 15-noded triangular elements with the software package PLAXIS. A drained analysis was carried out using Mohr-Coulomb's criterion for soft clay and sand. The numerical results from the FEM are compared with the experimental results which showed good agreement between the results. |
