| 英文摘要 | Monastic life begins with a personal choice and is, in its very essence, a continuous decision. Consequently, the concept of the choice of monastic life is of crucial importance to monastic theory. It is the identifiable beginning of a life which is often to serve as an example and tool for the foundation and maintaining of new religious entities. It is, therefore, to be understood and treated as a significant and powerful event. This article analyses how ancient authors of works belonging to three different literary genres (hagiographies, monastic treatises and monastic rules for communities) emphasize this significant moment in their writings. While hagiographers tend to focus on the role of divine agency, in other words grace, in the unfolding of events leading to said choice, authors of treatises and rules often put the importance of human exertion and spiritual discernment forward. The way this choice and its causes are represented by ancient authors significantly impact their theological message. It also raises the question of how divine and human actions are, or are not, imbricated, and which human ability, such as self-control and clear vision, is to be considered as the one enabling Christians to make that choice. Both questions ultimately lead to the mystery of the beginning of a monastic life. |
