英文摘要	This research refers to the use and application of the methylene blue technique (MB) for verifying pollution in River Itapicuru, urban perimeter of the municipality of Queimadas - Bahia Brazil. The objective is to analyze the effects of water pollution on the environmental system, as well as to point out the principal self-depuration zones. The methodology employed was developed with the use and application of the MB, acting as a reducing agent, for the evaluation of decomposition of organic matter in the water body, in association with interpretation and analysis of other physic-chemical variables (pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen), as well as field work and photographic survey. This allowed us to determine the principal self-depuration zones of river Itapicuru. With this study, we emphasizethe practicalcharacter and the low cost of application of this method for policy makersseekingconcrete alternatives to the "solution" for environmental problems in tropical river systems in semi-arid of Bahia, as well in the studies of modern geographic science.
