英文摘要	The year 2014 marked the twentieth anniversary since the consecration of the underground Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Elias in Coober Pedy. The town is situated in the desert, in the northern part of South Australia where the average daily temperature is over 45C. This mining town, the world capital of opal mining, and its Serbian Orthodox Church, one of the only three active Christian churches in the region, were built under the ground. According to the latest Census, the city population numbers 1695 people. The state capital Adelaide is some 846 kilometres away. The Serbian Orthodox Church of St Elijah was built in 1993 and was then decorated with high relief, iconostasis and stained glass windows. The sculpture and relief in the church were made by the Australian artist Norman John Aston and some of the icons of the iconostasis by the artist Dragomir Jasovic from Belgrade. The artists who executed the stained glass windows are anonymous. This paper provides an analysis of the architecture, sculptural decoration and iconography of the underground Serbian Orthodox church and demonstrates a somewhat paradoxical continuation of art traditions followed in the church's interior decoration.
