英文摘要	The ecology of a large arid region in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Absheron Peninsula with an area of 2192 km(2), was analyzed by environmental indicators and calculated social-ecological indices. They demonstrate that over 80% of the industrial potential and more than 60% of the country's population are con centrated in this region, which occupies only 6.6% of the total country territory. A trend towards increasing anthropogenic and technogenic impact has been registered. The number of adverse environmental factors limiting self-purification of the ecosystem is higher than that of natural factors contributing to the maintenance of environmental stability.
