英文摘要Drought is a major constraint to the productivity of agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas of the world. However, drought tolerant plant beneficial bacteria can enhance drought resilience in cereals through various mechanisms of plant growth promotion. In the present investigation, consortia (multi-strain combinations) of plant beneficial bacteria were screened to devise an agro-biotechnology for the sustainable production of wheat under drought. Series of trials were conducted to study the impact of various drought tolerant bacteria isolated from the nodules of legumes (chickpea, lentil and mungbean) growing in the arid and semi-arid regions. Isolates were evaluated for their osmoadaptive/drought tolerance abilities at various drought levels and further screened for plant growth promoting activities in wheat seedling at various moisture levels under axenic conditions. The results of the experiments depicted significant increase in the growth (root/shoot length and fresh/dry weight) of wheat seedlings due to the inoculation of C9, L2, M1 and M3 isolates under normal as well as drought conditions. Moreover, isolates selected on the basis of drought tolerance and plant growth promoting activities were evaluated for their potential to improve the growth of wheat seedlings under drought through combined/consortium inoculation in a separate jar trial. Outcomes of second jar trial revealed further increases in root/shoot length and root/shoot fresh/dry weight of wheat seedling through multi-strain/consortia inoculation as compared to single or coinoculation. Therefore, inoculation with drought tolerant, plant beneficial bacteria in multi-strain combination could be harnessed as a strategy for ameliorating drought stress in wheat.
