英文摘要Following Leo Marx's The Machine in the Garden (2000), this article provides a typology of the way in which nature is represented in a selection of European novels inspired by the First World War. Considering a wide range of authors from Max Deauville to Alice Ferney, including a number of classics of the genre, it identifies five principal positions or categories: arcadian nature, desert island nature, rural nature, primitive nature and apocalyptic nature, all of which respond in their varying ways to the extent to which humanity masters or is dominated by nature.
