英文摘要	We investigate the way Carpentier approaches the topic of European centrality in the Latin-American scene. The main focus of this paper is to observe Los pasos perdidos's critique on the civilization/barbarism and nature/culture debates, the axis on which the western expansionist ideology is based. However, the guiding principle of the work is the topic of travel, insofar as the novel follows this archetype that, amongst other things, pursues the encounter with the Other and the exotic land.
