英文摘要	The article first presents the interrelations between a Large Mine and the local Community in the perspective of social and environmental responsibility and sustainable development. Readers are then introduced to Brazil's Semi-arid Region - the poorest in the country - and its Large Mines, most of which have been operating for dozens of years. Next, an evaluation of the welfare and human development of ten different Communities is conducted using socioeconomic indicators. The results indicate that have low index rates of human development (HDI) and they show high percentage rates of poverty, which do not set them apart from the average index rates of other communities in Brazil's Semi-arid Region.
