英文摘要	The Bolivian Southern High Plateau (Altiplano Sur de Bolivia) is located in the southwestern part of Bolivia. It has a total area of 73,983 Km2, and it is characterized by the presence of large 'salares' (dry salt-lakes) and arid pampas with rainfall averages of 100 mm/year that present a temporal erratic behaviour, and low temperatures due to the altitude. Because of the predominant dry conditions, this region is one of the most desolated areas in Bolivia. Based on paleoclimatic studies carried out by various authors, it is believed that this region has been dry for a very long period, interrupted by sporadic short humid intervals. This paper attempts to study the climatic patterns and their relationships to the ongoing desertification process, and it is based on climatic data from the SENAMHI (Servicio Nacional de Meteorologia e Hidrologia) stations, with more than 10-year record. It is also based on the observations gathered in the fieldwork, conducted in the Technical Consultancy framework sponsored by the MAB-UNESCO Programme. Important aspects of the large-scale atmospheric circulation are considered, as well as the role of the Andes as an orographic barrier. Aspects of the rainfall, evaporation, water balance, radiation, temperature and winds are also discussed. A preliminary assessment of the El Nino and La Nina events and their possible relations to precipitation is presented.
