英文摘要 | Since at least the fourteenth century, the Sahara has served the West as a canvas on which to paint its greed, fears and ambitions. In that initial medieval moment, the painting was literal: the unknown wastes of the Sahara were depicted with brilliantly coloured pictorial representations of camel-riding nomads, exotic animals and African kings - the most famous of which holds the famed golden wealth of West Africa in his hands. 1 That picture all but disappeared as various 'realities' of the space made themselves known to Europeans over the next few centuries. The nomads, the environment, the kings became increasingly threatening while the wealth continued to entice. The Islamic religion of the desert dwellers took on enhanced significance as Christian Europeans faced the formidable power of Muslim Ottomans. 2 Multiple images of the Sahara vied with each other for predominance over time; historians stepped in to aid in the process of 'selecting' which would have pride of place at any given moment. Indeed, Africanists have (largely unwittingly) facilitated this historical artistry as they in turn have debated the meaning of 'Africa' in terms of the Sahara. It is my argument that while the decision of the Bush administration to launch its war on terror in the Sahara may be a political one, its success - the ease with which the narrative has been received in the West - can only be understood as part of the historical process by which Islam, violence and terror have been identified as generic to and synonymous with this desert region. |
