英文摘要	The recording of an extraordinary event which took place on February 19, 1845, and erroneously localized in the semi-arid region of Lagunillas de Urao, led to an exhaustive search through historical documents, oral traditions and live testimony. As a result of this enterprise, it was found out that in the Caparu sector near La Gonzalez, there is evidence of a landslide damming which occurred between 1930 and 1935. The slidings of La Gonzalez and Cerro Chorote were reevaluated, in particular the current dynamics of the former. The fragile equilibrium conditions of the Caparu lagoon and its southern flank, where the above indicated landslide damming occurred, were analyzed as well as the increasing deformation of the Chichuy bridge. The presence of two deep paleochannels 4-5 km downstream is a factor which led to make a very conservative estimate of unusual flow rates of 2,325 m(3) s(-1) and 3,400 m(3) s(-1), duplicating the return period estimated for 100 years.
