THE PATH OF NON-VIOLENCE IN VOICES OF THE DESERT

英文摘要In women studies, especially those concerned with narratives by women writers, violence takes a prominent position, given that it is one of the elements that distinguish the genres in the symbolic economy (cf. Bourdieu, 1999). This article deals with the different treatment given to violence committed by female characters in two works: the gothic novels by English writer Charlotte Dacre and the recent book by Brazilian novelist Nelida Pinon. Through a comparison between these two texts, this article aims at achieving a better understanding of how women writers have tried, throughout time and in different contexts, to subvert and annul the hegemonic order prevalent in the societies where they worked. This analysis will lead us to a surprising path to non-violence through literature.
