| 英文摘要 | Sahel desertification in Burkina Faso is the consequence of global climate change and deforestation. Wood is the only energy source for a rapidly growing population. Tree felling leaves ground vegetation unprotected, as far as drought and heat are concerned. Savanna gives way to a bare ground scattered with bushes. On these grounds hardened by eight months of drought, rain from June to September generates significant runoffs. In order to adapt to these conditions, valuable rainwater is retained wherever it falls. Grove sites developed by NGO Terre-Verte combine local farming practices, agronomy and ground modelling. All around the site, a fenced with a droughtproof hedge provides protection from the wildlife and retains runoff water. Inside the area, there is about a hundred 0.8 ha fields with trees, a dyke set along the lower edges and a pond. The local cultivation practice is called zai: the seeds are buried in a hole with heaped edges to retain water. This rugged soil slows water down during infiltration. Crop rotation is practiced as follows: cereal (mil, sorghum), legume (bean, sesame) and pasture fallow (in relation with nomadic breeders). The creation of a 100 ha (250 acre) site costs 80,000 euro and workers need to be supervised. The main condition is to get the population's agreement as to landholding and the selection of beneficiary families. The production is now twice as high as before, which leads neighboring populations to request the creation of new sites. |
