The potential use of crushed cemented sands, locally called 'gatch', as liners and covers for landfills in Kuwait was examined by laboratory tests. When excavated, the material is transformed into silty sands with fines ranging from 20% to 50%. Samples were obtained from one site in Keifan, Kuwait for testing. Modified Proctor Compaction Tests; and falling head permeability tests were carried out at different molding moisture contents. The results revealed a coefficient of permeability less than 1 x 10(-7) cm/sec for samples compacted at or larger than the optimum moisture content which meets international standards for landfill conductivity. The use of ordinary Portland cement, in the amount of 2% by weight as an additive, was examined.
