The Canaveral Port Authority has constructed Cruise Terminal 1 to accommodate the demand for home port and port-of-call berths for the largest cruise ships. The $100 million project included a 17,460 m(2) ( 188,000 sg ft) terminal building, a 1,022 car parking garage, two mobile passenger gangways, a 445 m ( 1,461 feet) long deep wall wharf, dredging with reuse of suitable spoil material, and scour protection mats. The berth is designed to accommodate the constantly increasing size of ultra-large cruise vessels. This paper will focus on the design and construction of the berth to accommodate the operations and loadings from Oasis of the Seas and other vessels. The selection and design of the berth's wharf and marine structures will be explained including the design of the deep bulkhead walls in poor soils, the use of battered piles and articulated rods for the tie-back anchor system, and the use of 12 upland mooring dolphins for a 200 MT service load. Passing ship hydrodynamic modeling and dynamic mooring analyses were also performed to assess surge effects on berthed cruise vessel operations. It will also describe the berth's scour protection, the development of the design criteria using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of propeller wash from Oasis of the Seas' bow thrusters and stern azipods, and how the resulting bottom velocities were utilized to develop a scour protection system consisting of geotextile, concrete articulating block mats, riprap and selective concrete injection. And finally, this paper will describe some of the challenges faced during the construction of the berth that was performed under an extremely tight ten month construction schedule on a site that was shared with the simultaneous construction of the terminal building and other upland facilities.
