Sediment Yield Estimate of River Basin Using SWAT Model in Semi-arid Region of Peninsular India

The collection of rain water and surface runoff collection over existing or planned storage system is being pursued as short/long-term measure in mitigating the impacts of climate change in semi-arid region. As many of the river basins in India where those regions are un-gauged and reliable data is scarce. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) derived model was used in sediment yield and runoff estimation of Yerala river basin located in semi-arid region of Peninsular India. The annual runoff from the basin was estimated using SWAT model, minimum 554.61 million m(3) (232.55 mm rainfall in 2003) and maximum 2,245.12 million m(3) (787.60 mm rainfall in 2009). Similarly sediment yield from the basin was minimum 2,204.31 m(3) (232.55 mm rainfall in 2003) and maximum 16,822.28 m(3) (749.02 mm rainfall in 2004) in period of (1998-2011).
