Desertification is one of the most serious ecological environment problem in the world, also an important content in the study of global change. The consequences of Desertification disasters lead to the loss of land productivity, land resources and the enormous destruction to the environment. The monitoring method of desertification is developed using NDVI, MSAVI, VC and land surface temperature data derived from MODIS data. And the method was used to monitor the desertification tendency in the Mongolian Plateau in July, August, 2001-2010. The results indicate that the moderately deserted area is mainly extended from the northern and southern part of Uvs province in Mongolia to Xilingol grassland in Inner Mongolia, with a very typical zonal distribution. However, the severe-desertification area is concentrated on the southern gobi desert and south gobi province in Mongolia, Alasha region in Inner Mongolia and adjacent area of western gobi. Extremely severe- desertification areas are mainly distributed in the three sand areas, namely, Horqin district, Hulan sharga sand region, the Badanjulin desert in Inner Mongolia and southern part of south Gobi province in Mongolia.
