This paper presents a new "grey-box" modelling approach of coupling transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to system identification for modelling the controlled system involved of fluid flow and heat/mass transfer related process. In order to illuminate this method, a fluid flow and heat transfer related process, i.e. a 3-D spatio-temporal air temperature distribution and input (inlet air temperature) dependent process in the desert climate environment simulation laboratory is considered. This method models chamber temperature distribution without the use of an analytical model. The important theoretical aspects of CFD and system identification is introduced. The high accurate estimate parameters of simulation results demonstrate CFD-based system identification is feasible method to model fluid flow and heat/mass transfer related process.
