Evaluation of environmental conditions in karst region of southwest China based on spectral characteristics of vegetation

Southwest China is one of the largest karst regions in the world. Vegetation in karst region has unique adaptation for shortage of soil moisture, rocky standing place and exceeding calcium. Vegetation features can be used to indicate geological characteristics of karst or non-karst areas, and stations of rocky desertification or non-degradation. Hyperspectral remote sensing is employed to analyze the differences of spectral characteristics between karst and non-karst vegetation, to find an indicator of environmental conditions in karst and non-karst region. The Mann-Whitney U-test statistical analysis showed that five wavelength were main characteristics of the vegetation reflectance variation in karst and non-karst region and could be used for evaluation of the environmental conditions. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that soil moisture, calcium carbonate, bare rock rate, and soil available nitrogen significantly cause variation of vegetation spectra. In,addition, all sampling sites of vegetation reflectance could be illuminated by CCA ordination diagram. Sites of the group I were mainly located in the karst region, while sites of the group II were mainly located in the non-karst region. Our study indicates that there are significant differences between spectral reflectance of vegetation in karst and non-karst region. Hyperspectral remote sensing can be used to evaluate the environmental conditions in karst and non-karst region.
