The pre-evaluation of the potential of HJ-1A satellite CCD camera to retrieve vegetation Leaf Area Index

Leaf Area Index (LAI) is used to determine the desertification area, drive ecosystem model and predict crop yield. Retrieving LAI from remote sensing data is an importance part application in ecological and environment filed. The HJ-1A satellite of China is included in the project "the construction of operational management and application system of the small satellite constellation on environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting". HJ-1A will take one CCD camera which has four VIS-NIR broad-width bands and the image width of about 700 kin. In this paper, the potential of HJ-1A CCD camera to retrieve LAI was evaluated in some aspects. Especially imaging geometry of HJ-1A CCD camera was mainly mentioned. Through evaluating LAI predicted accuracy, it is concluded that the varied imaging geometric parameters may cause great predicted error in some time and that the wide width of CCD camera image is necessary to deal with when retrieving vegetation LAI product.
