Options Analysis in Irrigation Systems (OASIS) is a strategy planning tool for medium to large-scale reservoir irrigation systems. It captures the impacts of a range of hardware: water resources, canal system and crops etc, and software like managerial interventions on water use, irrigation methods and depletion etc in irrigated agriculture as well. The core structure is the water balance model, which considers local water resources (ponds, drains etc). The model depicts the beneficial and unbeneficial depletion under given managerial conditions. It simulates the recycling paths of water which is captured by local storages. The model provides the possibility of various scenarios analysis in irrigation system to evaluate possible water saving irrigation techniques and respective influence. The model was calibrated with data in Zhanghe irrigation system (ZIS) and different scenarios were used to simulate the water balance and crop yields. The application of OASIS in ZIS brings us new understandings: local water resources contribute more to irrigation agriculture,rather than the main reservoir; water saving irrigation and water reuse in the study area has reached very good degree that the water using efficiency is close to the upper limit.
