Desert regions had seen a remarkable change from a potential hazard area to an insecure ecological zone of china due to improper land use, which significantly affected the national ecological security. Therefore, it is very important to optimize the land use to ensure its ecological security and sustainable development. This paper aims to evaluate ecological security level of Horqin Sandy Land on the basis of insecurity factors defined in the paper and optimize the land use structure accordingly. The basic principle of optimization is the land use mode of "Dune-Inter dune" based on "large area ecological construction whilst small area production development". Then the ecological security level of land use in Ba Xian-tong Town is evaluated and its land use structure is optimized by means of RS and GIS techniques. Finally evaluations are implemented which show that the optimization has achieved balanced eco-productive benefits.
