Remote sensing of dust in Africa using MSG/SEVIRI: Towards a multichannel dust index

The former Infrared Difference Dust Index (IDDI) is derived from the unique Meteosat IR channel to detect the mineral dust over the arid areas where it is emitted from. This paper investigates what could be a new multichannel IDDI derived from the 4 window channels of MSG and what improvements could be realized with regards to the current 1-channel product. Mineral dust shows a contrasted spectral signature in the TIR channels of MSG. This signature is distinct of the water vapor signature. These results let predict the ability of MSG to detect mineral dust and to separate its effect from water vapor effect. More analyses and simulations are necessary however, especially to model the impact of the Earth surface on the radiance outgoing to space.
